Jim & Maggi --

Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy.

For nearly five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well-being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.

His ideas and ideals are stamped on scores of laws and reflected in millions of lives -- in seniors who know new dignity; in families that know new opportunity; in children who know education's promise; and in all who can pursue their dream in an America that is more equal and more just, including me.

In the United States Senate, I can think of no one who engendered greater respect or affection from members of both sides of the aisle. His seriousness of purpose was perpetually matched by humility, warmth and good cheer. He battled passionately on the Senate floor for the causes that he held dear, and yet still maintained warm friendships across party lines. And that's one reason he became not only one of the greatest senators of our time, but one of the most accomplished Americans ever to serve our democracy.

I personally valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I've benefited as President from his encouragement and wisdom.

His fight gave us the opportunity we were denied when his brothers John and Robert were taken from us: the blessing of time to say thank you and goodbye. The outpouring of love, gratitude and fond memories to which we've all borne witness is a testament to the way this singular figure in American history touched so many lives.

For America, he was a defender of a dream. For his family, he was a guardian. Our hearts and prayers go out to them today -- to his wonderful wife, Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his extended family.

Today, our country mourns. We say goodbye to a friend and a true leader who challenged us all to live out our noblest values. And we give thanks for his memory, which inspires us still.

Sincerely,

President Barack Obama

Needless to say, we are merely on a mailing list. We haven't met the President in person, of course (though, that would be a highlight of our lives, certainly).

Blessings on Senator Edward Kennedy

Good Morning Quote, Special

Blessings to Senator Edward Kennedy, a Great Soul. His loss is a loss for all humanity.

Rest in peace, Senator, until your Soul returns to its chosen work on Earth.

Globe Correspondent / August 26, 2009

Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who carried aloft the torch of a Massachusetts dynasty and a liberal ideology to the citadel of Senate power, but whose personal and political failings may have prevented him from realizing the ultimate prize of the presidency, died at his home in Hyannis Port last night after a battle with brain cancer. He was 77.....

“We’ve lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever,’’ his family said in a statement.

“We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness, and opportunity for all. He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it. He always believed that our best days were still ahead, but it’s hard to imagine any of them without him.’

YOUR ADVICE SOUGHT!

Advice Sought!

As some of you know, Jim and I are going into the recording studio next week to continue to lay down tracks for at least two new albums' worth of material, continuing work we began last year.

We have a question to put to you:

In your opinion, is it truly worth making specific, individual albums on CDs anymore, or does it make more marketing and business sense to put individual tracks online and have people download the tracks they want, to make their own collection?

Our first two albums were made during a time when, yes, absolutely, people still bought "albums," and we sold out of our runs just fine...but does it make sense any more?

Airplay and on-the-gig sales aside (we can, of course, make a small number of CDs for those purposes) do you think the market for specifically-themed CDs (and the physical project) is viable enough to warrant the extra expense (and time) of producing that physical product?

ALL opinion sought, please let us know what you think.

Happy Birthday, David Crosby

David Van Cortlandt Crosby ~ born August 14, 1941

(How relevant the song still is! ~ and how influential CSN(+Y) was in our lives as budding young musicians. We still believe music can change the world! ...msd)

Long Time Gone
(David Crosby)

It's been a long time comin'
Goin' to be a long time gone

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long
Appears to be a long time
Such a long, long time before the dawn

Turn, turn any corner
Turn and hear (Turn and hear) what your friends and your neighbors might have to say, yeah
Something, something, something's goin' on around here
Surely, surely, surely will not stand the light of day

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long
Appears to be a long time
Such a long, long time before the dawn

Speak out, speak out against the madness
All I'm sayin' is speak your mind that is if you still can and you still have the guts to
Don't, no don't, no, try to get yourself elected, no, no
And if you do forsake this child you'd better cut your hair

It appears to be a long, yes it does now
Appears to be a long, yeah, yeah
Appears to be a long such a long, a long
Such a long, long time before the dawn

It's been a long time comin'
It'll be a long time gone (Gone, gone, gone, gone)

But you know
The darkest hour
It is always, just before your dawn

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long
Appears to be a long time
Such a long, long time....

Keep Going...

August 8:
"1923: A fourteen-year-old clarinet player named Benny Goodman lands his first professional gig, playing for a cruise ship operating on Lake Michigan near Chicago."

"I remember Glenn Miller coming to me once, before he had his own band, saying, How do you do it? How do you get started? It's so difficult. I told him, I don't know but whatever you do don't stop. Just keep on going."
